48-13 Australian Native Garden
History Festival – Adelaide Botanic Garden Precinct Architecture Self-Guided Walking Tour
Text
The Adelaide Botanic Gardens’ delightful Australian Native Garden, located next to the National Wine Centre, effectively displays the beauty of Australian native flora, of which the Adelaide Botanic Gardens’ retains the nation’s largest collection of more than 78,000 plants. The Australian Native Garden was designed by landscape architect and environmental artist Kate Cullity of TCL.
A South Australian Government Sustainable Landscape Project, the Australian Native Garden has been described as a demonstration of innovative and artistic ways of using water-wise, non-invasive Australian native plants, as well as the use of local, sustainable and recycled materials in the domestic garden. Demonstrating skilful composition and execution in the arrangement of an array of spaces and garden ‘room’ within a constrained and technically challenging site, the Australian Native Garden was the recipient of the 2011 Australian Institute of Landscape Architects SA Design Award.
